SACT is launching a new website soon. We’ll continue to make a positive impact and achieve more together.

Welcome to SACTs rural education program.

Our ‘Vusa the Guardian’ series of educational comic book titles (see species options below) are designed to teach children in rural schools surrounding wildlife protected areas about the importance of conserving their natural heritage and the natural behavior of various wild animals.

To view a summary of each comic and flip through the pages online, simply click on the comic title below (opens a new browser window).

OLDER COMICS

Older editions of the ‘Vusa the Guardian’ series are still available in printed comic book format (not available in digital format). However, most have updated thanks to our generous sponsors.

FUTURE COMICS

The “Vusa the Guardian” comic book series is a living initiative, constantly evolving to address new conservation challenges and highlight more of Africa’s iconic and endangered species. While we continue to distribute existing titles, several new comic books are conceptualized and awaiting funding to bring their vital educational stories to life. These include terrestrial species like the African Bee, Donkey, Hyena, and Rhino, as well as a dedicated comic focusing on the broader African Environment (in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals). In the marine realm, we plan to expand our focus beyond the African Penguin to cover species such as Sharks and Kelp Forests

POSTERS

SACT’s commitment to environmental education extends beyond the comic books through our collection of classroom-ready Educational Posters. Designed to complement the themes and characters introduced in the ‘Vusa the Guardian’ series, these vibrant, large-format resources provide visual reinforcement of key conservation messages. They are intended for distribution to rural schools alongside the comic books, serving as permanent educational aids for rural teachers, pupils, and communities alike.

IMPACT

140,000 Comic books and posters distributed to rural schools in Africa in 2025!

As of January 2026, SACT has distributed 134,500 comics to rural schools across Southern Africa. This achievement serves as a solid foundation for the Southern African Conservation Trust’s ambitious new objective: to reach a total circulation of 200,000 educational comic books and posters by the end of 2026

This goal is supported by the continued efforts of our global donors, corporate partners, and on-the-ground conservation NGOs. Achieving this milestone requires scaling up distribution across the initial regions and expanding into new territories and communities, particularly leveraging the recent diversification into marine conservation education.

This target is highly achievable, especially considering the expansion of the ‘Vusa the Guardian’ series. For instance, the current distribution metrics do not yet fully account for the forthcoming Ground Hornbill Portuguese edition distribution into schools in Mozambique, nor the significant impact anticipated from the new Marine Conservation Penguin edition, which is specifically targeted for distribution in Western Cape schools and libraries in South Africa.

This focused, species-specific regional deployment will be crucial to reaching our 200,000 goal, ensuring educational resources reach the hands of children who need them most.

Sponsorship and Printing Opportunities

For our donors and sponsors, the comic publications are protected by copyright. However, if you wish to print a quantity of our comics, we are happy to supply you or your company with the original high-resolution artwork. This artwork can be customized to include your company/organization logo on the cover and on the inside front or back cover, along with a custom message from you to the learners as a sponsor/donor. This option allows you to print the comics locally in your country.

If you would like the rights to print your own comics for local use, please contact Brian Courtenay at `brian@sactrust.org` or Des Langkilde at `des@sactrust.org` for a quotation.

Alternative Support

Alternatively, you may wish to make a donation to SACT as part of your corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, or make a direct cash donation to support rural school children’s education through our “Nature in the Classroom” initiative. As we say, “Education today is the currency of tomorrow!”

PLEASE CONSIDER SUPPORTING THIS WORTHY CAUSE.

Education is vital in rural areas lacking resources. We will confirm receipt of your funds/donation and confirm their utilization specifically for this program.
