Comic Summary

SACTs first marine focussed educational comic book, Vusa the Penguin Guardian, tells the story of Vusa’s visit to his Aunt Nomusa, who lives in a coastal village along the Atlantic Ocean. There, he dreams of Kiki, the spirit of African (Jackass) Penguins, who shows him the problems facing her colony and appeals for help. Vusa teams up with a local group called the Deep Blue Ambassadors (DBA) to tackle issues like plastic pollution, overfishing, and disturbance of nesting sites, ultimately becoming a “Penguin Guardian”.

Overview of Content

The comic is structured as a story mixed with educational “Did You Know?” facts and activities, covering several conservation themes:

  • Marine Conservation and Pollution: This includes the severe impact of plastic pollution (microplastics, entanglement) and oil spills on marine life, especially penguins and Cape Fur Seals. The comic highlights that 78% of all animal biomass is found in the ocean.
  • Overfishing and Ecological Imbalance: The story addresses how overfishing, particularly by large fish factory ships, depletes fish stocks, affecting the food chain and leading to fewer survivors among penguin chicks. It emphasizes that both penguin and seal numbers are decreasing, showing that they are not to blame for the decline in fish.
  • Community Action and Solutions: The comic shows community-led solutions, such as beach cleanups, installing nets over storm water drains, setting up communal recycling, installing fishing line bins, and adopting eco-friendly practices. The DBA children, like Taylor-Lee, play a central role in conservation efforts.
  • Endemic Sea Birds: A dedicated double page spread in the centre of the comic book lists endemic sea birds found along Africa’s Benguela Current coastline, their conservation status (IUCN symbols), lifespan, and population numbers.
  • Activities for Learners: The back pages include activities such as a Plastic Awareness Poster, a Maze, a Spot the Difference, a Problem-Solution Activity, a Diet Detective Activity, an Ocean Protection Plan writing activity, and a Crossword.
  • Glossary: Definitions of difficult words and Conservation Terms are included as most readers are non-English speakers.
  • Emergency Contacts: Reporting Procedures and a list of contact numbers for the Eastern / Western Cape and Namibia coastlines is included.
